Mother's Kitchen

Amma serving food

"Feed those who are hungry, help the destitute, console those who are sad, give
relief to those in pain, be charitable towards everyone. This is Mother's message to you. Real devotion to God is to be compassionate towards the poor and the suffering."

~ Amma

Mother's Kitchen Sydney

"Mother’s Kitchen” in Sydney is a community service activity run and supported by enthusiastic volunteers and is currently serving meals to between 50 to over 100 homeless people each month.  In 2003 Mother’s Kitchen (formerly known as Amma’s Kitchen) began operating in Sydney. More centres of service have since opened in other states (see below for more information).

"People have commented on how good the food tastes. Actually, we're not just feeding them food, we're feeding them love and kindness, which is exactly what Amma does."- Sue, Sydney.

Everyone is welcome to help serve a wholesome and nutritious vegetarian meal to the homeless and disadvantaged in Kings Cross/Darlinghurst. (See below for how you can volunteer)

Some volunteers are rostered on a regular, monthly basis while others prefer to fill in on a casual basis for regulars who can’t make it on a particular occasion. Some do both if they wish.

There are usually 5 to 6 people on the team and there is always someone in charge of the team to guide you.

In addition to serving the food, various volunteers make the soup, main course, salad and dessert. We’re always looking for more chefs! Food is prepared at home and brought in fresh and ready to serve on the same day. Volunteers can claim reimbursement if they wish.

How do I volunteer?
To offer your help with serving, or cooking a meal, or to make further enquiries, all you need to do is email Sangeeta at motherskitchensyd@ammaaustralia.org.au

(Your email address will be added to the “Mother’s Kitchen” email list so I can let you know when help is needed). It is necessary to register ahead of time as it is a small facility where we can fit in only a limited number of helpers at one time.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Mother's Kitchen Melbourne

Mother’s Kitchen Melbourne has been running since November 2011. The programme is in collaboration with North Yarra Community Health (NYCH), and Collingwood Neighbourhood House who have kindly provided their kitchen facilities and hall. We serve meals to about 30 to 50 people every month, including children, the elderly, homeless and people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

One elderly man movingly reflected that the spirit of hospitality he felt at Mother's Kitchen was for him an expression of real worship, and another male attendee commented that while he did not like vegetarian meals in the past, the food at Mother's Kitchen was delicious.

Where: Collingwood Neighbourhood House, 253 Hoddle Street, Collingwood (5min walk from Victoria Park train station)

There are usually about 6 to 10 volunteers involved in preparing, cooking, serving and cleaning. The meal plan is usually discussed through email one week before the serving day.  We are always looking for more volunteers.
