Transport to Public Program & Retreat Venue
Getting To Sandown Racecourse
Sandown Racecourse is 25 kilometres southwest from Melbourne’s central business district. It is on the Princes Highway, just past Springvale Road, and on the right hand side heading away from town.
By Car
From the city, take King Street, which becomes Dandenong Road which becomes the Princes Highway. Alternatively the Monash Freeway (toll applies) to the Springvale Road exit into Ferntree Gully Road then right into Springvale Road and left onto the Princes Highway, keep left and take the racecourse overpass. The turn-off to the racecourse is clearly signposted. From the City via the overpass and from Dandenong via Main Entry Gate 16. There is ample car parking at the course.
Melway reference: 80 C9
Melbourne Public Transport
Layout: In Melbourne, the train lines radiate out from the city, like the spokes on a bicycle wheel. Trains are generally the fastest way to get from the city to suburban destinations like Sandown Racecourse and Entertainment Centre. Buses tend to run point to point, often connecting north south in the eastern suburbs.
Fares: Melbourne has two fare zones. Zone 1 is a circle whose central point is the CBD. Zone 2 is a circle outside Zone 1, covering all the suburbs outside of Zone 1. Sandown Park Racecourse is in Zone 2. If you are travelling from the city to Sandown Park Racecourse, you will need a Zone 1 + 2 ticket. This is available for a 2 hour period for A$5.80, and for a full day for A$10.60. |
By Train
Sandown Racecourse is next to the Sandown Park railway station. From the city, take a Dandenong line, Cranbourne line, or Pakenham line train. Trains on these lines run at intervals of 20 mins or less throughout the day until 11.15pm. Access to the venue is through Gate 14. It takes 40 minutes from Flinders Street to Sandown Park station.
The venue is inside Sandown Racecourse and Entertainment Centre and NOT Sandown Park Greyhound Track.
By Bus
The two buses that run near the Sandown Racecourse do not run from the city. These buses won’t suit everybody, but may be helpful to some. Grenda’s Bus 800 runs from Chadstone to Dandenong. It starts at the Chadstone Shopping Centre and runs via Middle Road, Warrigal Road and Portman Street to Oakleigh Railway Station. It then runs along Station Street, Atherton Road and the Princes Highway, where you would get off for Sandown Park Racecourse. This bus terminates at Dandenong Railway Station, but people coming from Dandenong are probably better to just catch the citybound train. Visit www.grenda.com.au for timetables and routes.
Bus 888 runs along Springvale Road, from Nunawading railway station in Nunawading, through East Burwood, Glen Waverley and Mulgrave to the Princes Highway, where you would get off and walk east approximately 2 kilometres to get to Sandown Park Racecourse. Or you may avoid the walk by catching the 800 down the Princes Highway, if the timetables make that feasible.
The 888 return trip runs the from Edithvale Railway Station, going through Edithvale, Aspendale Gardens, Braeside, Keysborough and Springvale South before arriving at Dandenong Road, where you would alight and walk about 2 kilometres right (east). Again, you may possibly avoid the walk by catching the 800 along the Princes Highway.
For timetables and route details on the 888 bus, visit www.metlinkmelbourne.com.au.
From Tullamarine Airport
Skybus connects Tullamarine Airport to Southern Cross Railway Station (formerly Spencer St) in the city. It operates seven days a week, departing every 12 -15 minutes between 6am and 9:30 pm and half hourly or hourly at other times. Cost is $16 onway or $26 return. See www.skybus.com.au for details.
At Southern Cross Railway Station, buy a Zone 1 + 2 ticket and catch a Dandenong/Cranbourne/Pakenham line train to the Sandown Park Railway station.
